Holtrop highlight community-energy leadership at SOLARTYS event in Barcelona

The technical conference “The Strategic Role of Energy Communities”, held in Barcelona and organized by the SOLARTYS Energy Transition Office with the support of ICAEN and the ECENOVA project, brought together leading experts from across the energy sector.

Among the key speakers was Piet Holtrop, CEO and founder of HOLTROP S.L.P., who provided an in-depth legal perspective on the current regulatory framework for energy communities in Spain. Holtrop emphasized that, although the concept of energy communities has not yet been fully integrated into national legislation, collective self-consumption offers a strong foundation for their deployment and already presents clear fiscal and economic advantages for participants.

Holtrop also represented the European project JALON, which focuses on promoting renewable-energy communities in rural regions. His contribution underscored the project’s role in driving collaborative, citizen-centred energy models and advancing the local energy transition.

With these interventions, the SOLARTYS event reaffirmed itself as a strategic forum for exploring the opportunities, challenges, and future development of energy communities in Spain.
